Using sepia ink for figure doodles

Two sepia ink drawings.

'My cat,' sepia Pitt pen, A5, cartridge paper.

'A little pet for you,' sepia pen and pan pastels, A4, mixed media paper.

I decided to try out sepia (brown) ink for my doodle-style pen drawings today.  I used sepia Pitt pen for the scribbled lines and in the pan pastel image, I went over the lines with some pale washes of sepia ink before applying the pastel colours.

Image 1. My cat.

I scribbled away for ages it seemed and I thought there was nothing except a mess of marks... but then I spotted the child carrying a very big cat.  So with this method,  it is important to keep on scribbling until something emerges.

Image 2. A little pet for you.

I found that the sepia ink is much more subtle in tone than the black ink I have been using for previous ink and pastel drawings, and so it was an interesting change of pace.

This one has only about 1 to 2 layers of pastel colour.  I usually use about 3 or 4 layers of colour.  I'll probably leave this one pale in tone and try more layers in a later attempt.   I could also darken the sepia under-drawing more to darken tones.

A bit of a learning process.

I hope you have a wonderful and creative week.

Bye for now.
