These are Sumatran tigers and are the smallest in the tiger family. They looked pretty big to me so I wonder how big the biggest tigers are?
I visited the zoo mainly to see live tigers so that I could improve my artwork: paintings of tigers.
Here is a study in my art journal which I finished before I went to see the tigers. I now have a good idea of how to improve my work plus I have my own photos for reference instead of relying on photos from copyright free sites.
Since I now know we have tigers in my local zoo, I will go back a few times for more photos!!

Maybe this first tiger study has plenty of room for improvement but I'm happy to have made a start. Those markings are pretty tricky to get right.

they are so endangered in the wild :( sad to see them in zoos but it might be the only place soon to see one alive :(

What a lovely tiger study - and so nice to have those reference photos from the zoo! We have some Bengal tigers at ours (Portland, Oregon) and they are large!
I remember watching one in what my mother-in love called a "pissing and pacing" routine when her Burmese cat was so engaged ... And thought that if the tiger could jump like Crowley Brown, he could easily soar over the moat!! (Fortunately, he didn't!)
I have a beauty of a domestic kitty with fabulous makings of a Bengal (domestic/big craft cross in the 1800s) and he lioness to jump and perch in awkward spots ....my Chinese year is Metal Tiger, and I have sketched a few over the years.
