Which paper for ink and pan pastels?

Which papers are best for ink and pan pastels?  Some information about the papers I've tried out so far.

'Bird-watcher,' ink and pan pastels, 12 by 12 ins., card.

I have found that  almost any smooth paper works well for the mixed media choice of pen and ink with pan pastels.  Smooth card, cartridge paper, Bristol paper, or even HOT pressed, i.e., smooth watercolour paper are good choices.

Smooth paper is a good surface for easy movement of the pen and, in contrast to chalk pastels which need a sandpaper or velour type of tooth, pan pastels will slide easily over and stay fixed- with intense colour- on smooth papers.

You don't really need a heavy weight paper for the pen and pan pastels approach, but heavy weight paper is good to use in case you decide to add a wet medium in addition to the pen and pastel approach at some point.

I have used card a lot because  I happen to have a stock of it in 250gsm.

With smooth card, there are no strands or loose fibers of paper to get caught up in your pen nib so you can swish the pen over it like on a roller coaster ride..  Plus, pan pastels slide on, and stay on, smooth card.

I also like heavy weight cartridge papers such as those by Winsor & Newton, or Daler Rowney, (smooth heavy weight,  220gsm., papers).

I recently bought some mixed media paper by Canson, (Imagine paper, 200 gsm.,)  and I must say I love this paper.  It feels so silky.   I think I will get some in larger than A4 size.

Fabriano smooth (hot press) watercolour paper 300gsm is also good.

You have to experiment to see which paper works best for your approach and which paper feels good to the touch.

There are lots of papers out there.  I am looking forward to trying a few more.

Do you have a favourite paper for your  pen works?  I'd be interested to know.

I hope your week is going well.

Bye for now.

Lovely artwork. I try lots of different papers. Maybe I try too many, but I like to experiment with different things. It's all part of the learning process I guess.

gorgeous pen and pastel art June! Thanks for sharing about all the papers too. My favorites are the Canson Mixed Media paper, the Strathmore 140 lb. watercolor paper, and the Neenah Solar White 110 lb. paper. They are all good heavy substrates for anything I do. Happy PPF!

Hi all.

Just a quick reply. Jackie, I did not do practical art training such as a fine arts degree...but I did study the anthropology of art...theoretical art, I guess. I loved practical art as a child and as soon as I could get into some art I did. I did a few life study classes, and I've followed some online courses recently.

Susan, I seal my pastels with a spray of fixative.

I don't know why birds keep cropping up in my work. But now I remember they figured highly in the tribal people whose art I studied...maybe they sneaked in from there!

I like the parrot family though!!

Thank you for the comments.

Lovely painting. I've never tried pan pastels, only the stick type.

love Fabriano smooth for coloured pencil work :) and smooth paper for pen work since the smooth paper doesn't "eat" the pen nibs :p
