In the sunflower garden-doodle

Doodling this morning, A4, biro.

'In the sunflower garden,' A4, sketchbook page.

I bought a cheap sketchbook from poundland yesterday and this morning doodled this on the first page in black biro.  The sketchbook pages are shiny and slick and just great for swishing biro over.

Have a lovely weekend.

Bye for now.....

Fox

Girl with fox.  Pen and wash doodle- journal page.

'Girl with fox', pen and wash, A4 sketchbook page.

Some random pen scribbling as I couldn't make up my mind what to do this morning.  I then added some watercolour washes to define the shapes.

I like to do pen scribbling like this because its quite relaxing and also it can stir up ideas for future art work.

This was done in a sketchbook which  has reasonably thick paper but it is shiny smooth ...however,  it took the scribbling and the watercolour washes quite well.

(I have a few designs for paintings on file but I don't think I'll be able to do any involved work, such as acrylics or wax crayon work, until after Christmas...for obvious reasons).

In other news:

If you are a female and into art journalling, you may want to check out this FREE online retreat...which is for relaxing with art and recharging the batteries over the Christmas/ New Year period.

Have a great weekend!!

Bye...

concertina doodle girls

'Girls', concertina booklet, folds ATC size, pen and wash

These doodle girls are on the reverse side of the concertina booklet I started at the beginning of 2014.  I do them to get in the mood for art for the day. They run in a long strip of 10 images.  The bottom photo is actually the beginning and the top moves to the end.

Here is the other side and a better view of the concertina.

Apart from doodling, doing some altered book poetry, and trying out making tags....I have not done much in the way of actual painting of pictures.  I had decided to take time out to explore various techniques but now I am feeling like getting back into making paintings.  Probably in the New Year.

Bye...

merry jesters

'Merry Jesters,' pen and wash, 4 by 6 ins., paper

1. Merry Jesters is 'Doodle of the day'.

2. Watercolour/ mixed media painting

I got some stencils at the craft shop yesterday and tried out a painting using a modified version of the technique I used on Friday with 'tickling eagle under chin'.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong with this painting but I soldiered on and completed it.  Its more muted than the eagle painting.

Here's the painting:

'Hello little bird', mixed media, 11 by 15 ins., paper.

I like this drawing so I may do it again sometime.  In the meantime, I think you have to paint the acrylic textured background on fairly thickly to get a good contrast in your painting.  If that is the effect you want. I put my medium on rather thinly in this painting.   Trial and error at work!

Iris

'Iris in a blue vase', 4 by 6 ins, pen and wash on watercolour paper.

Postcard size study of an iris inspired by a photo on wetcanvas.  I picked this because I thought it looked simple, but in fact I found it quite intricate..so I took a fairly careful approach to get all the positions of the petals.

It could be thought of as a small study for a larger format with a looser approach.

Today's doodle

'Girl with dog in the park', 5 by 7 ins, pen and wash on watercolour paper.

Yesterday's doodle

'Girl play',  4 by 6 ins., pen and wash on watercolour paper.

I think I will pick or buy some flowers at the weekend to do some studies from life next week.

doodle art journal updates

Here are a few views of the doodle art journal.  The top is a doodle done today.  The middle shows the concertina effect, and the bottom image shows the cover, which is a piece of silver patterned card (wedding stationery from a craft pack).

I discovered that my local craft shop (Domino crafts) are having a demonstration afternoon next Saturday (with coffee and biscuits).  It would be good to find out about things such as 'embossing'.

Doodling again

ATC size doodles, pen and wash.

A couple more doodles in my concertina art journal.

I bought myself a book on Leonora Carrington's surreal artwork for Christmas.  I only came across her work in December 2013.  The book is by Susan L. Alberth, title: Leonora Carrington, surralism, alchemy and art, Lund Humphries, 2010.

There are lovely full color plates of her work.  What drew me to it was her inclusion of animals and humans in fantasy settings.  It will take a while to explore all the layers in her paintings.  But a very pleasurable task!!

I signed up for a postcard exchange on atcsforall website.  So I am looking forward to designing some 4 by 6 cards!  Topic is open: any imagery; any materials. So that is plenty of scope.

Doodles 3

'Doodles', pen and wash, ATC size

Doodles in a hand-made concertina sketchbook, ATC size pages.  I have started doing quick doodles before tackling a painting for the day as I find it helps get me 'in the mood' for artwork.

Making a spare doodle a focal point on journal page

'In the butterfly garden', mixed media, journal page.

This little pen doodle of a girl was collaged onto the abstract background and became a focal point for the page.

The background became a garden, so I stamped some butterflies and flowers around the black & white pen doodle, then added colour to tie her into the page.

Its a good way to use up spare doodles, and also to transform them into a work of art in their own right.

The spare doodle becomes an important focus.
